Food and Feeding

Wheatens are efficient dogs who eat a modest amount of food as adults. They are very different to the “garbage guts” breeds many people are used to. If you buy a puppy from us we give you a complete diet outline in our puppy manual. Puppies who go to homes within Melbourne and surrounds come home to you with a couple of days of fresh cooked food and  some frozen meat so you have a start while you find your way with healthy real food for your dog.

At Alinex Wheatens we recommend a version of the “whole prey” diet. We suggest that as much as possible, the nutrients your dog needs should come from fresh, air dried, or freeze dried animal parts. (Meat, offal, bones and all the extras (skin, tendon and cartilage.) We love the health of our dogs and do not want to ever take their wellness for granted. Providing this diet is easier than ever with the amazing range of foods and dried whole food treats available. Here are some of our favourite suppliers in Australia:

We purchase all of our air dried food rewards and chewing snacks from Howzyadog.

We do not recommend any additives, “natural” or otherwise on air dried treats.  Flavour enhancers like “hydrolyzed yeast extract” can be considered “natural” but totally unhelpful for your dog.

We feed our dogs a cooked and air dried diet; they seem to prefer this to raw (dogs have co-existed with humans around fire for tens of thousands of years so an exclusively raw diet is not truly “natural” for them.). We have no problem with your dog being fed a raw diet. Any diet and any any meal preparation for dogs carries risk and it is up to dog owners to be informed of the risks and benefits of their choices. Do not microwave food for your dog and never use a microwave device to reheat food.
